Education for Children
Sunday School
Sunday School is offered on Sunday mornings in September through May from 11:00 – 11:50 a.m. We begin the Sunday School year with a kick-off picnic and bounce house, fun games and socializing. The following day our Sunday School is opened.
Sunday School is designed for children kindergarten through the 4th grades. Before Sunday School begins, children may visit the snack table for food and beverage. We encourage parents of younger children to bring their child to the classroom and pick them up after adult education. Teachers will be in the rooms and at the snack table to welcome and assist.
We have two classrooms for the two age groups:
The first group welcomes younger children who are in kindergarten through the second grade. The focus of this group is reinforcing God’s great love for everyone and helps children know they are cherished by God and those at Old St. Paul’s. Children experience God through Biblical Stories, such as the Good Shepherd, Kingdom Parables, the seasons of the church year, and sacraments. We use puppets, storytelling, parables, games, skits, manipulative materials and conversation to present the loving basics of Christian faith. Children are invited to go deeper into their Sunday School experience and express themselves with crafts, prayers, and conversation.
The older group welcomes children in the third and fourth grades. Children build on their faith and knowledge by exploring stories in which people of faith make decisions that help them build a relationship with God and others. We expand the stories they learned in the younger group with more complex thoughts, prayer methods, and conversation. In addition to the weekly short lessons, each year we provide a Biblical story with a longer narrative arc providing a way for children to go deeper into understanding historical context, and well as how people of faith throughout history made decisions and lived their lives. We cover the creation story and talk about how it blends with science, the story of Moses and the Exodus, and the History of Jewish and Christian people. We use timelines, the Bible, and other materials to help make the stories applicable to their lives.
